Parasport and Recreation PEI is celebrating an unforgettable moment in Island sports history! Veronica MacLellan, a 14-year-old para-swimmer from Prince Edward Island, has etched her name into the record books by winning TWO bronze medals at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
These wins don’t just represent medals—they represent perseverance, dedication, and a shining example of what para-sport is all about.
Two Medals, One Incredible Journey
Veronica’s first medal came in the 400 m para freestyle, a race that tested her strength and focus. She delivered an incredible performance that had Team PEI and supporters across the country cheering her on.
But Veronica wasn’t done yet. Just days later, she returned to the pool for the 100 m para backstroke and once again proved her determination, powering through the water to capture her second bronze medal.
This achievement makes her only the third swimmer in PEI history to bring home a Canada Games medal—and the first ever to claim TWO in the same Games! That’s history in the making.
“It feels so crazy—I never thought I would ever get one medal, and now getting two is just an insane experience. I feel very proud of myself and very honoured to come here and win medals for my province,” said Veronica after her second podium finish.
Why This Matters for PEI and ParaSport
Veronica’s story is more than a win for Team PEI—it’s a game-changer for para-sport in our province. She has shown what’s possible when talent meets opportunity and support. Her success will inspire the next generation of young athletes with disabilities, proving that dreams can become reality.
When Veronica stepped onto that podium—not once, but twice—she carried the hopes of countless Islanders and set a new standard for what’s possible.
What’s Next for Veronica?
This is just the beginning. Veronica will take a short break to recharge after her outstanding performance, then turn her focus to an exciting next step: traveling to Chile this October for an international swim meet to confirm her official para-swimming classification.
With two Canada Games medals already to her name at just 14, the future looks incredibly bright. Could the Paralympics be next? We believe it’s possible.
