2022 Junior Nationals Wheelchair Basketball Championship
ParaSport and Recreation PEI was excited to host the 2022 Junior Nationals Wheelchair Basketball Championships from June 10-12 at the Chi Wan Young Center in Charlottetown. Athletes from all 10 provinces competed in the three-day event which acted as a seeding tournament and test event for the 2023 Canada Games. The event was a big success as we had top junior athletes showcase their talent during this national level competition. The crowd was electrifying! With over 400 students from 4 different elementary and intermediate schools in Charlottetown during the opening game. Final results, PEI joined team with New Brunswick to claim Bronze with a 71-50 victory over Alberta.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada also hosted a NextGen Camp on June 13-14 at UPEI, directed by Jeff Dunbrack, High Performance Director. 56 junior athletes stayed in Charlottetown after the tournament to participate in the two-day camp which featured on-court activities and skill development drills. This was an awesome opportunity for Jeff to develop and improve the next generation of wheelchair basketball players in Canada.
We would like to thank everyone that participated and helped out with the event to make it happen. Special thanks to our sponsors, SERF, the Province of PEI, the City of Charlottetown, 2023 Canada Games and Maid’s Marian for your generosity.
The Championships and camp made a huge buzz about the game of wheelchair basketball in PEI. ParaSport and Recreation PEI hopes to be able to recruit more athletes of all ages to our Wheelchair Basketball Programs starting this September.
