2014 Marked the 40th Anniversary of ParaSport and Recreation PEI. In honor of this milestone, ParaSport and Recreation PEI hosted the 40th Anniversary Celebration at the Culinary Institute of Canada on April 30th.
ParaSport & Recreation PEI became incorporated in 1974 as an organization to promote inclusiveness for those with physical disabilities, and to provide sport and recreation opportunities. In the past 40 years the organization has gone through various name changes; PEI Recreation and Sport Association for the Disabled, PEI Recreation and Sport Association for the Physically Challenged, Paralympics PEI and ParaSport and Recreation PEI.
The evening was a great opportunity to celebrate the successes of the organization. Board members, athletes, volunteers, friends and staff both past and present were invited. The evening began with a video presentation to commemorate the past 40 years, a brief history of the organization and honored past Paralympian’s and Presidents of the organization.
Paralympic Medalist, Mark Arendz and Wheelchair Rugby athlete, Kristen Cameron were the evenings special guests and shared their stories of how they overcame barriers to excel to where they are now in sport.
In conjunction with the 40th Anniversary Celebrations ParaSport & Recreation PEI also hosted its first ever ParaSport Festival on April 29th at the Centre for Community Engagement at Holland College.
