ParaSport and Recreation PEI Seeking Volunteer Wheelchair Basketball Junior Coach

The Wheelchair Basketball Junior Program is a program that is new to ParaSport and Recreation PEI. It is a program designed to teach youth between the ages of 7-16 the basic fundamental skills of wheelchair basketball in a fun and interactive atmosphere.

The program runs every Tuesday from 5:00-6:00pm at UPEI Gymnasium and is open for all abilities and skill levels. However, youth with disabilities do take priority and spaces are limited. The program will run through until April.

ParaSport and Recreation PEI is willing to provide education opportunities and resources for the applicants that may not have adequate experience with the sport of wheelchair basketball.

The responsibilities of the coach are:

  • To introduce youth to the sport of wheelchair basketball through interactive activities and drills.
  • To educate the importance of physical literacy to participants.
  • To work alongside ParaSport and Recreation PEI staff to develop lesson plans and goals for the program.

The applicant should have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Knowledge of basketball and wheelchair basketball is considered an asset
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Leadership, initiative and passion for sport
  • Exceptional interpersonal, organizational and supervisory skills
  • Ability to represent the organization in a positive and proactive manner
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license

ParaSport and Recreation PEI Offers New Fitness Program for Adults with a Physical Disability

ParaSport and Recreation PEI has teamed with one of their local sponsors, Synergy Fitness and Nutrition to offer a new fitness program for adults with a physical or visual disability.  The program includes both cardio and strength training exercises and will be offered from November 2017 through to May 2018.   This program is open to anyone regardless of fitness level from those to have never been to a gym before to the every day gym enthusiast!  It will be adjusted for your personal needs and goals and will change every 4 weeks to give you a little extra challenge!

The program is offered every Saturday morning from 9:30-10:30 AM at Synergy Fitness and Nutrition located in The Mount.  The registration fee is $50.00.

2017 World Sledge Hockey Challenge Returns to Charlottetown

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Two members of Canada’s National Sledge Team, P.E.I. native Billy Bridges (Summerside) and Liam Hickey (St. John’s, N.L.) are in Charlottetown for the fourth annual ParaSport Festival, hosted by ParaSport and Recreation PEI – the official kickoff to the 2017 World Sledge Hockey Challenge.

The festival is a multi-sport event showcasing a variety of para sports offered in the province, including wheelchair basketball and tennis, goalball, para-cycling, and sledge hockey. More than 170 students and staff are registered for the daytime school session, while the event is open to the public from 5-7:30 p.m. Bridges and Hickey will lead the sledge hockey sessions for both the students and public with a demo from 6:30-7:30 p.m., which also includes members of the P.E.I. Ice Breakers joining the players for some thrilling sledge hockey action.

The 2017 World Sledge Hockey Challenge is one in a series of international tournaments Canada will participate in leading up to the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, in March. Canada, the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge silver-medallist, will be joined by Italy, Korea, and the defending gold-medalist, the United States, in the four-team event at MacLauchlan Arena, Dec. 3-9, 2017.

“The World Sledge Hockey Challenge offers an exciting opportunity for the public to see some of the world’s top ParaSport athletes in action,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “We encourage everyone to come show their support for Team Canada.”

Fans can take advantage of the best pricing option by purchasing full-event ticket packages – which include all six preliminary-round games, both semifinals, and the bronze- and gold-medal games – for just $50. Tickets will also be available for purchase at MacLauchlan Arena starting Nov. 1. Other ticket options including preliminary-round and medal-round day passes will be available for purchase on-site starting Dec. 3.

“We are honoured to be hosting this event in partnership with Hockey Canada and the City of Charlottetown for the second year in a row, and fourth time overall,” said Bob Kenny, ParaSport and Recreation PEI board president. “We are grateful to once again have the opportunity to showcase this exciting parasport right here on P.E.I., these talented athletes are inspiring our young, up and coming para-athletes to do great things.”

All preliminary-round games, the semifinals, and the bronze-medal game will be streamed live at HockeyCanada.ca, while TSN and RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcast partners, will broadcast the gold-medal game, Saturday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. ET/5 p.m. AT; check local listing for details.

ParaSport and Recreation Hosts ParaSport Festival

ParaSport and Recreation PEI is hosting a ParaSport Festival on Thursday, October 12th at the Bell Aliant Centre! This year will feature a FREE session that is open for anyone in the community to attend. The community session will run from 5:00-7:00pm.

There will be a variety of para sport stations set up so you can come and go as you please and try out any sport you wish to! Sports that will be demonstrated include; wheelchair basketball, goalball, wheelchair tennis, cycling, karate, biathlon, target shooting, and much more!

Then come try out sledge hockey with Canada’s National Sledge Hockey team members Liam Hickey and PEI’s own Billy Bridges from 6:30-7:30 at MacLauchlan Arena!

31st Annual ParaSport and Recreation PEI Christmas Shopping Spree Fundraiser is Underway

August 25, 2017

The Fundraising staff is back to work with the 31st Annual ParaSport and Recreation PEI Christmas Shopping Spree. This major fundraiser raises much needed dollars to support sport and recreation programs for people with a physical disability on PEI.

First prize is a $3,000 shopping spree anywhere on PEI and second prize is a Christmas basket valued at $500, including a gift card to purchase everything needed for Christmas dinner.

Tickets can be purchased for $20.00 each or 3 for $50.00. Tickets are pre-sold and can be mailed or delivered to your home or workplace. To purchase a ticket contact the ParaSport and Recreation PEI Fundraising Office at 902-368-4669. The winning ticket will be drawn on Friday December 13th.

We would like to remind everyone that this is not a telemarketing company, and that all the proceeds of this fundraiser goes to ParaSport and Recreation PEI and its programs.
