Sunny Skies for the 2016 Big Dog Convenience/Irving Night Dash

August 18, 2016

The 2016 Big Dog Convenience/Irving Night Dash, held on the beautiful The Mount Property, went off without a hitch on Friday evening despite the down  pour on Friday afternoon.  The event saw over 80 runners and walkers participate in either a 5 Km or or 10 Km race in the dark!  All runners were wearing glow sticks, head lamps and neon shirts…they were a sight you couldn’t miss on the streets of Charlottetown.  While the event is a “fun run”,  prizes were awarded to the top three runners (Male/Female) in each category.  The top runners from this year’s event were:

5 KM- Female                                                                     5 Km- Male
1. Raeona Lacey                                                                    1. Todd MacAusland
2. Brennah Stairs                                                                  2. Greg MacAusland
3. Christine Gauthier                                                            3. Jeff Cook

10 Km- Female                                                                   10 Km- Male
1. Melissa Murray                                                                  1. Kevin Stairs
2. Jessica Frizzel                                                                    2. Alan Easton
3. Bethany Doyle                                                                   3. Dan Petit

Following the race, runners enjoyed a BBQ put on by the Parkdale Sherwood Lions Club and a cold beverage!

This event could not have been possible without the support of our amazing volunteers.  We had over 40 volunteers lend a helping hand on Friday evening…over 25 of those volunteers where lined up along the Confederation Trail providing light for runners and offering words of encouragement!  Special thanks to all those who volunteered!

Also, we would like to extend a huge thank-you to all of our event sponsors:

Big Dog Convenience & Irving, Title Sponsors
The Mount, Host Venue
Parkdale Sherwood Loins Club, BBQ Providers
Synergy Fitness & Nutrition, Event & Prize Sponsor
The Co-operators– Water Station Sponsor

All proceeds from this event will be used to support ParaSport and Recreation Programs for Islanders with a physical disability.

Stay tuned for the details on the 2017 Night Dash…

Wheelchair Tennis Program Returning for the Summer

July 21, 2016

ParaSport and Recreation PEI is pleased to announce that a wheelchair tennis program is going to be offered on PEI this summer.   The program is set to begin on Tuesday, July 26, 2016.  It will be offered every Tuesday from 6:00-7:30 PM at the Terry Fox Sports Centre in Cornwall.  It is open to individuals with a physical disability of all ages and abilities.  No experience is necessary and sport wheelchairs and rackets will be provided.  This initiative is made possible through financial contributions from the Canadian Paralympic Committee and the Government of Canada.

Wheelchair Tennis

Wheelchair tennis is one of the forms of tennis adapted for those who have disabilities in their lower bodies. The size of courts, balls, and rackets are the same as tennis, but there are two major differences- athletes play using a tennis wheelchair and during play, the ball is allowed to bounce twice. The second bounce may also occur outside the court.

If you would like to learn more about the wheelchair tennis program, feel free to contact the ParaSport and Recreation PEI office at 902-368-4540.
